Easy Guacamole Recipe
I did not care for avocados (and therefore guacamole) until my last trip to Mexico. We went as a group to a Mexican cooking class at a local restaurant. We made and learned so much about authentic Mexican food, of course including guacamole! Because I had made it I wanted to try it, and I am SO glad I did. I am now obsessed! I made it twice the week we got back and I am always looking for excuses to make it.
We learned through our teachers memory and he taught us so many tips and tricks and I could very vividly remember when I got home exactly how to make it just as delicious as that day!
- Simple, fresh ingredients.
- Comes together in less than 10 minutes.
- Easy to customize and make your own.
- Perfect as a dipper on its own, with salsa, or served on taco night.
What is Guacamole?
Guacamole is a Mexican dip made from avocados. It is rich and creamy in texture with added flavor from tomatoes, onion, cilantro, jalapeno, lime, salt, and pepper.
Ingredients for Guacamole
- avocado: Choose one large ripe avocado or two medium ripe avocados. Slice the avocado in half lengthwise all the way around the avocado and twist. When scooping the avocado out of the skin, leave a tiny bit of flesh around where the stem of the avocado (pedicel) attaches to the avocado as it is thought bacteria can get in the avocado this way.
- Roma tomato: Choose a ripe tomato for the best flavor. Slice the top of the tomato off, slice the tomato lengthwise, and then dice.
- white onion: Finely dice a quarter of a white onion to equal approximately 1/4 cup.
- cilantro: Choose fresh, bright green cilantro. Chiffonade the cilantro.
- jalapeno: Remove the seeds and membrane from the jalapeno to make it less spicy.
- lime: We were taught to squeeze in one half of a lime and a small squeeze of the second half.
- salt & black pepper: Add 3 pinches of salt and 2 pinches of freshly ground black pepper, or to taste.
You will also need a bowl and a fork to mash the avocado.
How to Make Guacamole
This is a simple guacamole recipe that you can whip up in no time.
- Mash your avocado and prepare your other ingredients.
- Gently mix everything together.
Enjoy!
Tips for the Perfect Guacamole
For best results, make sure your ingredients are ripe. I wanted it too soon and my avocados and tomato were not ripe enough and the flavor was not as good and texture not as creamy!
When you first mash your avocado, don’t mash it too fine. It will continue to mash when you mix everything together and it’s nice to leave a little bit of texture. On that note, don’t overmix when mixing everything together so it’s not too mushy.
Adjust flavors as needed! Add back some of the jalapeno seeds for some heat or more or less lime juice to taste.
Save the pit from the avocado and add it back to the guacamole to keep it from browning.
Keep in an airtight container with the pit in the fridge for 2-3 days.
