This classic take on an Acai Bowl is only 4 ingredients and is so healthy you won’t feel guilty when you indulge on the deliciousness!
A few years ago I went to a local “fast casual plant-based cafe” that I can’t get enough of and had an Acai Bowl! That was my first one and I have been hooked ever since. Thank you KB & Co!
I have never had much of a sweet tooth and if I do ever have sweets I tend to gravitate towards fruit. I love having an acai bowl because it’s basically fruit on fruit. No additional sweetener is added because the fruit already adds enough sweetness and it makes it healthier!
I was over the moon excited when I went to Hawaii recently and couldn’t get enough authentic Acai Bowls. When I got back it’s been on my to do list to start making my own! I didn’t realize how easy it would be and now I can’t stop making them. Once you see how to make acai bowl and how easy this acai bowl recipe is, you won’t be able to stop either!
What is an Acai Bowl (and what the heck is Acai?!)?
Okay… Let’s start at the beginning. You might be wondering what is Acai and how to pronounce Acai… It’s ah-sigh-EE. I find when I go out and say it any other way I get corrected 90% of the time LOL.
Acai is a berry that is harvested out of South American rainforests. They are often considered a superfood. Some of the nutritional benefits include:
- Full of antioxidants. Want to know more about how antioxidants are beneficial for your health? Check out my blog about detox water where I go in depth about what an antioxidant is and the benefits.
- Tons of fibre and calcium
- Good source of Omega-3’s. This is a big one for me as I feel like because I don’t eat fish I can be lacking in this nutrient
One thing to note… I actually found it difficult to find Acai Berries. After 4 different grocery stores the only place I had any luck was at Planet Organic. From what I’ve heard/seen you will have the best luck at a local organic store like Whole Foods, Plant Organic, Trader Joe’s, etc. The brand I got was https://www.sambazon.com/ and it came as a frozen puree that was 4 100g packs which is perfect for individual acai bowls. As I said above I don’t prefer overly sweet so I got the pure, unsweetened Acai puree and I found the bowl was perfectly sweet without it!
An acai bowl is essentially a smoothie bowl that contains Acai berries.
