An Easy Fall Dessert

Growing up fruit crisp was a staple in our house and it’s still one of my favorite desserts. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth but if I had to choose I would always choose a fruit option!

When fall comes around and there’s an abundance of apples I can’t help but want to do all of the fall baking. I often would make this berry crisp but with an abundance of apples I decided to make an apple version and it’s the perfect combination for fall!

  • All of the flavor of apple pie, with none of the work!
  • Can be made in advance, perfect for when you have guests coming over.
  • While this is commonly served as a dessert, I think the leftovers make a perfect breakfast. It is mostly fruit after all 😉

Ingredients

  • apples – you will need approximately 6 apples.
  • sugar
  • flour
  • cinnamon

Crisp Topping

  • oats
  • brown sugar
  • flour
  • cinnamon
  • butter
  • coconut – this can be left out if you prefer. I use unsweetened shredded coconut but any coconut will do.
  • pecans – optional. Substitute your favorite nut.

What Apples are Best for Apple Crisp

Any apple can be used for apple crisp. It will always turn out delicious! In the fall I will use whatever local (or fresh picked!) apple I can find.

In any other season if I’m making apple crisp I will choose granny smith apples because I love the contrast of the tartness of the apples against the sweetness of the crisp topping. But golden delicious, red delicious, and fuji are all good choices!

Should you peel the apples?

I prefer to peel apples when making apple crisp because I find they can become tough to cut through with a spoon.
