An Easy Baked Pear Dessert

  • The perfect combination of sweet, tender pears with a nutty, crunchy crumble.
  • This baked pears recipe has very simple prep.
  • A healthy dessert you can feel good about serving.
  • Easy enough dessert for a weeknight treat and elegant enough for a dinner party.
  • Leftovers make a great breakfast treat 😉

Ingredients

  • pears: the star of the show! Baked pears are the perfect way to showcase these juicy fruits. Make sure they are ripe for the best flavor. You can bake them in whole halves or slice them. Swap the pears for apples for another quick dessert.
  • oats: I use rolled oats for best results. Instant will work in a pinch.
  • pecans: I love the crunch and flavor pecans bring but leave them out if you prefer or swap them for walnuts or almonds.
  • brown sugar: Adds sweetness and a caramel-like flavor to the crumble topping.
  • butter: incorporating cold butter into the dry ingredients creates a crumbly texture when baked. I used unsalted butter, but if using salted butter skip the added salt.
  • cinnamon: adds a lovely warmth to the dish. Try adding a pinch of nutmeg.
  • salt

To level this baked pear recipe up, serve warm and top with whipped cream, whipped topping, ice cream, or even yogurt! Top with a drizzle of honey or caramel sauce.

You will also need a 9 x 13-inch baking pan. I used an apple corer to carve out the center of the pears to make it easy.

What are the best pears for baking?

Any pear should work just fine in this recipe, but if you’re comparing pears here are my suggestions…

  • Bosc Pears: Bosc pears maintain their shape when baked, making them an excellent choice for this recipe.
  • Anjou Pears: Anjou pears are also firm and slightly sweet. They work well in baking and add a pleasant pear flavor to the crumble.
  • Bartlett Pears: While Bartlett pears are often eaten fresh, they can also be used in baking. They have a softer texture than Bosc or Anjou pears, so they might result in a slightly softer filling in the crumble.

How to Bake Pears

  1. Cut the pears in half and core them.
  2. Make the crumble topping.
  3. Sprinkle crumble topping on pears and place them in the baking dish.
  4. Bake in the oven until crumble is golden brown and pears are tender.

Note: Each pear half will use about 2 tablespoons of topping. When coring them, if you make the hole a little deeper it will help all the crumble fit.

Should Pears Be Peeled Before Baking?

The skin becomes quite soft once baked, so no need to peel before baking.

Notes

If you are finding the pears tipping over a lot when trying to add crumble topping, you can cut a little piece off the bottom to make it flat.
