A few years ago I went to a local “fast casual plant-based cafe” that I can’t get enough of and had an Acai Bowl! That was my first one and I have been hooked ever since.

I have never had much of a sweet tooth and if I do ever have sweets I tend to gravitate towards fruit. I love having an acai bowl because it’s basically fruit on fruit. No additional sweetener is added because the fruit already adds enough sweetness and it makes it healthier!

I was over the moon excited when I went to Hawaii recently and couldn’t get enough authentic Acai Bowls. When I got back it’s been on my to do list to start making my own! I didn’t realize how easy it would be and now I can’t stop making them. Once you see how to make acai bowl and how easy this acai bowl recipe is, you won’t be able to stop either!

What is an Açai Bowl?

Okay… Let’s start at the beginning. You might be wondering what is Açai and how to pronounce Açai… It’s ah-sigh-EE. I find when I go out and say it any other way I get corrected 90% of the time LOL.

Acai is a berry that is harvested out of South American rainforests. They are often considered a superfood. Some of the nutritional benefits include:

  • Packed with antioxidants.
  • Good source of dietary fiber.
  • Rich in Omegas and other vitamins.

And an açai bowl is essentially a smoothie bowl that contains Acai berries.

Açai Bowl Ingredients

  • Açai Puree: Can be hard to find. I often buy at Trader Joe’s, otherwise have the best luck at whole foods stores.
  • Banana: A frozen banana will help with the consistency. I find it blends better if it’s pre-sliced.
  • Frozen Berries
  • Apple Juice: I like apple juice as it lets the flavor of the acai berries standout. You can substitute in your favorite milk for a creamier version.

The best part of an acai bowl is topping it with your favorite toppings. Some of my favorite ideas are…

  • Fresh fruit (sliced strawberries, blueberries, bananas, etc.)
  • Seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, flax, chia)
  • Nuts (almonds, cashews)
  • Flaked Coconut
  • Hemp Hearts
  • Granola
  • Cacao Nibs
